Ethics in Structural Engineering

Abstract: A 17 page paper discussing instances of building and other structure collapse in Asia in examining the ethics of design and construction of commercial buildings, bridges and other public structures. Technological advances have allowed the field of structural engineering to change dramatically in only the past few years, and engineers face more questions of ethics of choice than ever before. The paper discusses engineering organizations' codes of ethics before progressing to the philosophies of Kant (the categorical imperative) and Mill (the greater good) in providing a framework for decision making that can contribute to structures of greater integrity and safety. The paper uses examples from India, China and Japan. Bibliography lists 15 sources.
