Abstract: A 12 page research paper that examines the art of music appreciation and what it takes to really listen to music. The writer argues that knowledge of how music is composed and musical history adds to the appreciation and enjoyment of the discerning listener. The three planes of listening as defined by Aaron Copland are discussed and the writer includes a brief survey of the basic period in musical development. Bibliography lists 4 sources.
