Manatees: Man's Absent Stewardship

Abstract: 8 pages in length. Whether hunted, poisoned by pollution, caught in flood gates or injured/killed by speedboats, Florida's manatee population faces tremendous challenges to remain intact as it looms ever nearer to extinction; of the aforementioned threats, pollution and maiming/death by recreational speedboaters are by far the most impacting. The extent to which such activities and man-made problems have placed manatees on the threshold of obsolescence is both grand and far-reaching; that man's disrespect for and indifference toward the dwindling manatee population speaks to a distinct lack of responsibility where humanity's duty as steward of the animal kingdom is concerned.
